Patient rights

  • To be told your diagnosis, the proposed treatment and its likely cost before it begins
  • To be examined in privacy, with a female attendant present where appropriate
  • To seek a second opinion, and to receive copies of your records for that purpose
  • To refuse a treatment or procedure after being told the consequences
  • To an itemised bill and an explanation of every charge on it
  • To raise a complaint with the hospital administrator and receive a reply

Patient responsibilities

  • Give an accurate history, including all medicines and treatments already taken
  • Follow the treatment plan, and tell the doctor if you are unable to
  • Respect other patients' privacy and keep noise low in ward areas
  • Stay within visiting hours and limit attendants to those permitted
  • Settle bills as advised so that treatment is not interrupted
