Overview
Urology is the hospital's most established service. Stone disease dominates the caseload in this region — hard water, heat and inadequate fluid intake make it common — and almost all of it is treated endoscopically rather than by open surgery.
The programme also covers prostate enlargement, urinary obstruction, urethral stricture and cancers of the kidney and bladder. Every plan begins with imaging and an honest discussion of whether an intervention is needed at all.
Kidney stone treatment
PCNL — Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy
For large or hard kidney stones. The stone is reached through a small tract in the back, broken and removed. Usually a two to three day stay.
URS — Ureteroscopy with laser
For stones in the ureter. A fine scope passes through the natural urinary passage and a laser fragments the stone. Often a day-care or one-night procedure.
Cystolitholapaxy
For bladder stones. The stone is broken and washed out through the urinary passage, with no external cut.
Prostate and obstruction
TURP — Transurethral Resection of the Prostate
For an enlarged prostate causing a weak stream, night-time urination or retention. Performed endoscopically without an external incision.
Enlarged prostate management
Assessment with flow study, ultrasound and residual urine measurement. Medication is tried first where symptoms allow.
Urethral stricture treatment
Narrowing of the urinary passage is managed endoscopically or by reconstruction, depending on the length and site.
Urological cancers and keyhole surgery
Kidney cancer surgery
Assessment with CT imaging followed by removal of the tumour or kidney, laparoscopically where the anatomy allows.
Bladder cancer treatment
Cystoscopy and endoscopic resection of the tumour, with follow-up surveillance planned from the outset.
Laparoscopic urology
Keyhole approaches for selected kidney and upper tract procedures, giving smaller wounds and a faster recovery.
